Beginners Guide to Torn City

Okay...you have decided to sign up for Torn City (good choice!) and are a bit lost with all the options. Reading the entire tutorial at the beginning is no fun, so what should you do? Well, start with this scenario, and read the tutorial when you wait for your energy to restore.

First of all: let me stress that in Torn City, levelling is NOT the most important thing !!! You should always make sure you are a strong guy. So for the beginning, forget about attacking people, but build your basic stats!

The game runs in real time, every so often you will be given energy and nerve, which you can use to train, attack and do crimes with. Everyone gets 1 nerve every 5 minutes. People who donate get 5 energy every 10 minutes, those who don’t get 5 energy every 15 minutes. You also get a small amount of happiness every so often, but this is less important at the start.

Step one: Crimes

You begin the game at lvl 1, with a small amount of money. The first thing you should do is go to the crime-screen. Just do the 'search for cash' crime a few times (best results are 'under the old bridge'. Whenever you login, crimes is the first thing you do! Why? Simple. You are more succesfull in crimes when you have the happiness-bar filled up. If you go to the gym before doing crime, or end up in jail or hospital, your happiness drops. So, do the crimes when it is most likely you will succeed: when the bar is full...just when you login.

For the first ten days you will have a tick by the crimes you can easily do, and you will start off by searching for cash. Each crime has 3 main outcomes: Success, failure or jail. Success is in green, failure in brown (you will neither gain or lose anything) or jail in red. If you end up in jail you will lose a certain % of your crime experience (part of your total experience). The bigger a crime the more likely you are to end up in jail if you don’t have enough crime experience, so if you do go to jail you may need to try smaller crimes again to build your experience back up. So the golden rule is:Do not rush it, but don't proceed to the next crime untill it shows the tick (first ten days) or untill you succeed 80% of the time (later on).

Step two: Get a job, you lazy bum!

You may be a criminal, but you still want a job! Jobs earn you a little money every day, but you do not have to do ANYTHING (wish those jobs existed in real life!). You will probably start with the grocery or the armyjob, as the other jobs have some requirements you cannot meet yet.

In the army, you can use the job points you get every day to increase your battle stats. As a grocer, you can steal more cash every day... it is up to you which you prefer: money helps you doing education courses, battlestats help you later on

Whatever you choose, you will start earning money. Earning money from your job is a little slow; you get paid at 18:00 game time along with your working stats gains. As soon as you have $500, go to education and start the intelligence courses. After the first two intelligence courses, you can switch to the medical career, which has better pay, and better job specials. With 500 intelligence (the third intelligence course), you can even switch to education, which has very decent jobstat gains and a special, which earns you 100 intelligence points.

Step three: Gym

Right, you have done your crimes, and probably found about $50. Good job, now is the time to train your stats, because your starting value of 10 for each stat (strength, speed, dexterity and defence) is not gonna be enough to survive the violent streets of Torn City.

To train you will need a membership to a gym, go to the newspaper and click local gyms. At first you can only buy the $100 membership. Go to the gym and click the links as you wish, it will cost 5 energy each time you train something, the amount you gain is random, but also depends on happiness. Don’t use all of your energy at once though; you might want some to start an education course. (This becomes more important after a few days).

Step four: Casino

Going to the casino is a nice way of getting more cash. When you play the slots, on average, you *should* gain more than you lose (yeah, unlike the real thing). The cost of gambling is variable, if you line up two similar numbers you get twice that back, 3 numbers you get twenty five times that back. If you get lucky you can easily be up a fortune!

If you feel like roulette, then don't. Many guys say they have found the "lucky numbers" that appear more often, but playing roulette like that costs a lot of trial and error. Right now, you do not have the cash to afford that!

Another game is the game hi-lo. The dealer gives you a card and you have to guess whether the next card is higher or lower. The bet is $5 times your level (estimate), and if you win, you get half the pot extra. (So the first time, you'd get $3, making the pot $9, next win you get half the $9 etcetera. People are making a lot of money on this, but a winning system has not yet been found.

Playing the casino is limited to 75 times, however, if you work in the casino, you can use a job special to increase this amount. Also, by voting for Torn City, you can get an additional 15 times per day.

Poker is potentially a HUGE moneymaker. You play Texas Hold'em against other players. If you are better than them, you can earn loads of money. It is said some newbs manage to pull 70 Million a day from the pokertables!

Some general stuff

Points

If you look again at your menu bar you will see the 'points' count. These are bonuses you can get, usually for doing reward schemes, or voting for the game at TWG (via the link in tc). Points let you do things later on in the game, you may want to use 20 to buy a stock ticker, but until your level 10 there isn’t much else you can do with them apart from maybe sell them on the points market. Points have gone up in price from $250 when they first came out to $25,000 a while ago. However, the prices seem to be dropping now. It might be a good idea to hang on to your points untill you need the money (for education courses). If you DO decide to sell them on the market, check the current price before you put them up for sale. You wouldn't be the first to sell them at a disgracefully low price!

Weapons and attacking

As a new player, don't go wasting your energy on attacking. And, as a consequence, don't bother about weapons untill you reach at the VERY least lvl 5 (better: 10). When the time is right to begin attacking, you can buy yourself the best weapons you can afford then. This will save you the money you lose by constantly buying and replacing weapons (like I did...). Also, be sure you can afford the ammunition the weapon needs!

For more about weapons in Torn City check the reference sheets

Being attacked

Every now and then, someone will attack you and leave you lying in the street. Don't bother about it. This guy was just looking for experience to level quick. You better just stick to the gym and train your battlestats, because that way, you will be stronger for your level than those stubborn guys wanting to level up fast. I have seen level 10's with the stats of a lvl 4. Don't fall for that trap!

Playing the investment bank

After a while, you will reach level 5. Congratulations! At this stage, you will have access to the investment bank, which can be found in the city screen.

The investment bank offers you five investment opportunities, where you have to deposit your cash for a certain fixed period of time, in return for which you will receive a nice interest. These options can be found at this reference sheet.

Now, I know that the the highest percentage sounds great, but....if you have small amounts of cash (which is very likely), it is often a good plan to go for the short term plans, as you can only have ONE investment going at any given time.

During the investment, you keep earning money (salary, crimes, etc). If you go for the short term investment plan, you can invest this money sooner.

But how to chose?

  1. make timelines (with pen and paper), marking out the weeks, for each option you are considering
  2. put all the amounts you make on them and calculate them towards the end of the period. So, say you are considering either a one week, or a two week investment, for the two week investment, you write down the interest at the end of the two weeks + your regular income, and add it all together by the end of the two weeks period. For the one week period, you will have the income by the end of week 1, which you then reinvest for the same period, along with the money you made.
  3. Sounds confusing? Try googling on "future value" or on the "Net Present Value" method, from which this system is derived.

Some examples

(the rates used are not the current rate, but are kept for calculations sake.

Option 1: Long term

You invest 5K for a month, and keep earning. After a month, you will have $ 7500 from the bank and (4 times $1400=) $5600, totalling a stunning $ 13,100

Option 2: Two week investment

You invest 5K for two weeks, after which you have (120% of 5K=) $6,000. Together with two weeks earnings ($2800) you now have $8800. You reinvest this money for another two weeks, after which you receive (120% of $8800=) $ 10,560 and two weeks earnings ($2800), totalling $ 13,360. Hey, that's surprising...the amount is higher !! This phenomenon is referred to as compounded interest. It works in real life, it works in Torn City!

Option 3: One week investment

This one, I am gonna do quick, as you probably already have understood how it goes. Week one: 5K in the bank, after week one, $5,250 (5% interest) from the bank + $1,400. Reinvest this $ 6,650 and in week two you get $ 6,982 (rounded down). Add this weeks earnings of $1,400 and reinvest ($ 8,382). After this, you receive $8801 and your earnings of $1400. You reinvest for the fourth time ($10,201) and get, after week 4: $10,711 + earnings of $1,400 = $12,111 !

In the example above, the two week plan was the best option. In your case, the best option depends of the amount of money you earn other than from the bank. As a general rule, you can say that the higher your weekly earnings are compared to the amount in the bank, the more attractive the shorter term investment plans are. However, you always need to calculate for yourself!

hi, i have gotten a few msgs about attacking ppl for money. i am a total noob
@ lvl 1. i got 20k for doing it today, and ended up in hospital for half an
hour.
what is up with that? do many ppl do it?
thanks
Wollongong[12833]   |SAdministrator |2009-08-05 18:39:20
Yes many people do it. Reason for this is that if people attack you and lose,
you get a positive ratio, which may lead to merits.

However, I recommend not
doing it, your energy is worth too much.
