Hello and welcome to Goldenguard's stock market basics/tutorial V 2.0 This is the place where you should go if you want to learn how to play in the stock market if you find any wrong information or if you think there is something missing please tell me (Goldenguard [262] ASAP so i may fix it ... you WILL be rewarded for your aid if it turns out that you are right.
What is the stock market?: The stock market is a place where you can buy stocks that can potentially make you more money or make you lose it... it all depends on how you play, there are alot of variables so it will take a eye for details and the cunning of a fox to make a killing out there.
Is the stock market a good place on making money? : Yes and no... it is all on how you play and if you are lucky... it is kind of like the casino.
How does the stock market work?: the stock market is simple to understand despite the size of this tutorial. the stock market works in 15 minute intervals also known as updates and will go up and down depending on two things... One: How many people are buying and selling stocks... the more people sell the lower it will go the more people buy the higher it will go (so if you can get alot of people to buy you can make more money when it goes up) Two: The second thing this depends on is how much people are buying and selling the items that are related to the company... say if people were to buy a gun from big al's gun shop the stock price should go up and selling a gun should go down
How to play: To play in the stock market you need two things, a nice amount of money (probably 20k or more just to be safe) and 20 points to buy a " Stock ticketer" (click on the bold to follow a link to where you can buy the stock ticketer).
Okay I have the stock ticketer but what does everything mean? : When you have the stock ticketer you can go to the stock market and you will see 30 different companies all with either green or red things to the right of them and prices. Green means that the price for the stock has gone up... if you own some of that stock that is a good thing because it means you had made some money. Red means that the price for the stock has gone down and if you own some of this stock it means that you have lost money. Yellow yellow means that there has been no change from the last 15 minutes’s price; this is neither good nor bad.
Just as a example if you buy some company shares (lets say we buy 50) for $120 each and the price of the shares goes up to $240(eventually because it won’t just jump like that) then you have doubled your money and you can sell it for double of what you paid... but don’t get too greedy
what will i see when i go into the stock market?: Well when you click on the stock market link in the city you will enter a page that will show you all the company's going down a list and on that list you will see the following on each company(for list of current company's look further down this tutorial)
Your portfolio : this is seen in a lighter grey box you click on this to see what stocks you own and what has happened to them (more will be explained later in tutorial)
Stock Logo: this tells you what the company is and it also doubles as a link to futher information about the company once again explained in detail later in the tutorial but the important thing is this is where you are able to buy stocks
Stock Price: this is rather simple, it tells you what the current price is of the company, this is how much it would cost you per stock if you were to buy at that time
Price change: This tells you how much of a change there has been since the last update(15 minute interval), these changes will most likely be small but give it an hour and it should add up if it is going well for an hour.
% Change: this works pretty much the same as the price change but tells you in the form of a percentage of the company's total worth.
Last 24h: This is a graph showing you how well the company is doing on a hour by hour basis showing you the last 24 hours
Any tips you can give me?: Well I have been giving you tips but if you want more just look at the quoted parts down the bottom for any tips from other players but just a little one from me... it is a good idea to do research into a stock before you purchase it....just to help you from choosing one that could go bankrupt
What is this portfolio thing i see?: The porfolio is the place where you hold all your stocks and it tells you how each of them have been doing since you have bought it and it is the ONLY place where you can sell your stocks. The portfolio will show you the things that the main page will show you but it wont be by the 15 minute update, it will tell you what it is from when you bought it, along with that it will also tell you how many shares you have and how much they are worth... this will be the ammount of money you get if you were to sell them.
How do i buy stocks/shares and how do i know what one is the best?: When you are looking at all the stocks all you need to do to buy them is to click on the logo of the company you are intrested in to have the option to buy some shares. You will have two options down the bottom of the page (both will be preset to the maximum that you can buy with your current money) one of the options being how many shares you wish to buy and the second how much money you would like to invest, this one will round it the ammount you wish to the nearest ammount of shares that you can have with the ammount of money you type and it will tell you how many shares and how much it will cost before you invest.
Why is "Sell" greyed out on my stock in my portfolio?: Well basicly it means that you havent had that particular stock for 6 hours yet... this matters because there is a penalty of 1% if you wish to sell the stocks before you have had them for 6 hours...but by no means does the greyed out "sell" mean you cant sell =D
When should i sell my stocks/shares?: Well hopefully you should sell them when you have made a good profit but you could sell them if you think that the stock price will go lower... but doing this you will make the stock price go lower yourself. A trick is to try and predict what other people would do and act accordingly but remember if you do not want to get penalised by 1% then you should at least wait 6 hours.
Ok im having trouble choosing what stock i want to buy from...what do i do?:well ... there are 2 ways you can get help and that is by getting help from other players... and i dont mean going to some random guy and saying what should i buy i mean going to the stock market forums and have a look there... but the problem there is that the info there might be old.... so id say you should be techical and go get mIRC ... hop on it get to the torncity thingie and make your way to the stockmarket channel.... you can actually talk to people there who are buying and selling and giving info... it is also a great place to learn some tricks =D
I clicked on logo but what is all this information about?: This is where things get confusing even for me and i am man enough to admit that i dont know a couple of things in here but when i learn i will update it. Here you get extra information on a company like what the company is related to and you also get the las 24 hours of the stock changes in both graph and number form (if your seeing green and alot of it then it is a good company). As for the things like the networth and the turnover things... yea i dont understand them so just disrgard them for now untill i figure out the true meaning of them.
Going though the city and all the way to the portfolio all the time is taking too long... is there a shorter way? Instead of going to your portfolio all the time to see how your stocks are doing you can click on the home link and watch the scrolling text at the top of the page so you know what is happening.
Does a group of people buying and selling stock effect the market in any way? There has been ALOT of speculation over this but it is my opinion that it does... that’s why it is a good idea to join one of those organized buyers groups even tho the coordination required is so immense that most of them break apart
Other questions
I dont like the stock market... can i sell the stock ticketer? No...but keep at it... it might take time but it will be worth it
Does the stock market open and close at a certain time? It goes for 24 hours 7 days a week.
